"Urban Pergola" - Philadelphia, PA

Project Brief:

Sun Shade erected in a typical Philadelphia Row Home. Physical constraints and limitations included the boundary of the existing patio, structural capacity of the concrete slab, and building proximity to neighboring yards. The "pergola" had to provide sun protection and serve as a sculptural addition to the property.

My Role:

I was commissioned to design and build the sun shade. The shading system was designed as an extension of the residence, as the client sought to exit the kitchen and onto the patio and feel as though they were stepping into a green house. By re-imagining a typical pergola's roof structure, I created a vaulted ceiling with latticed shading elements. The lattice's shadowing effect was a significant point of interest, providing enough shade so that the user could dwell comfortably on the patio all day.
